The – visible – rotor bears the words ‘CERTINA Mechanical Watches since 1888’. It sports a brown leather strap and bears the same transparent case back. The other, slightly more affordable, special edition has a rose gold PVD lunette, hands and rectangular indexes. You would expect the Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 Himalaya Special Edition to be a limited edition, but it is not The markers deserve special notice since these are nickel plated. The case back is transparent, with Certina 1888 Dhaulagiri 1960 engraved in it.

The top spec Himalaya Special Edition is distinguishable from the regular Powermatics thanks to it’s silver colored dial and lunette and steel bracelet. They mark the first successful attempt to climb mount Dhaulagiri in 1960, where the team wore earlier versions of the DS-1. Its retro looks are complimented by a very modern movement with a power reserve of 80 hours.Ĭertina now offers the DS-1 Powermatic 80 as two Himalaya special editions. If you like classic watches but do not want to stick up with some character traits of said classic watches, the Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 Himalaya Special Edition is unmistakably a watch for you. I think it works well enough for the moment.Quick specs Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 Himalaya Special Edition It came with a stainless steel band, but that's not really my thing, so swapped it out temporarily for this cheapo leather band until I find something that fits better. Luckily I have a pretty flat top side of my wrist, which helps quite a bit. The watch is 40mm, which is just at the far end of what I can pull off on my tiny 6.25" wrists. I believe you can just make it out on the left photo above. The dial is a very subtle silver sunray, that really lights up under certain circumstances - the second photo on the right is in direct sunlight and you can see the 'rays' pop up.Ĭrystal is a just barely curved sapphire with an AR coating.Ĭase is all polished except the very top of the lugs, which are brushed on one side - a very nice but subtle detail.

The huge plus here is that you can take the watch off on a Friday night, and it'll still be running come Monday morning. The movement is apparently also in some Tissot and Hamilton models. It features the ETA C07.111, which is an ETA 2824-2 modified to reduce the beat down to 3hz, combined with lightern "synthetic" components (no one appears to be sure exactly what the synthetic material is, so far as I can tell from hunting online), all with the result being an 80 hour power reserve - hence the model name. Certina says this is an homage to a 1960 DS-1, although I've not found a photo of one to confirm how faithful it is to the original. You'd think it'd be easy to find a watch with a curved dial, but nope. So, I've wanted a dress watch specifically with a silver curved sunray dial that's remenicent of 50s & 60s watches for the longest time, and just stumbled into this Certina model a couple weeks back. I've noticed that Certina is not seen a whole lot on these forums, not many AD's in the US. /r/WatchExchange for buying, selling, trading watchesīanner photo courtesy of /u/northscylla Please take a look at our community rules and FAQ before contributing!./r/WatchHorology our sister subreddit for horology, watch appreciation, history, technical discussion and related topics.Simple Questions and Recommendations ThreadĬome hang out in the Official /r/Watches Discord!
